Things I Am Thankful For

Because of a turning point in my childhood, I learned the value of gratitude. Ever since then, I’ve always tried to be mindful of how lucky and blessed I am in all factors of my life.

There’s a certain power and magic that gratitude can give you. It grounds you back to the positive aspects of life and it makes you learn how to cherish and savor all of the good things you may come across. With that being said, here is a gratitude list of things that I am thankful for:

My Family

I was raised without my parents. It’s just my brother, my aunt and I. Despite our small family, I am blessed to have such a good relationship with them.

We’re the type of family who is comfortable joking around with each other, but is still vulnerable and sensitive enough to pay attention to what each other is feeling. They are open to talk about any topic so I’ve never really felt like i’m not allowed to talk with them about certain things.

They have always been supportive of me and all of my endeavors. Looking at it now, I realize how lucky I am to grow up in a family with such a trusting and healthy relationship because not all people get to have that.

My Friends

I only have a small circle of friends but I couldn’t have chosen any better group of individuals to surround myself with.

My friends are very loyal, reliable and trustworthy. They have always been there for me when I needed them, every anxiety attack, breakdown, stress, everything. I’ve always known and believed that I could count on them.

They are very smart, talented, artistic, and driven. They’ve influenced me a lot in wanting to better myself, thinking critically about a lot of topics, and they know how to translate a lot their thoughts and meaning into art. Being surrounded by friends like these greatly impacts how I strive to be a person who can be on the same level as them.

My University

I’m not gonna lie about the fact that there are a lot of things that my university has done that I do not agree with. Still, I am grateful to be a student of one of the top universities in the Philippines.

It is because of my mom and my family’s trust in me that got me there. It is a place that opened a lot of opportunities for me, and a place where I experienced growth and independence. It has changed my mentality about all the possibilities that are available.

I can see how being surrounded by smart, hard-working and ambitious individuals can completely change one’s mindset and perspective, which I think is necessary in life.

My Financial Stability

I don’t come from a wealthy family. However, we are lucky enough to be living just fine in quarantine because of my aunt’s stable income.

We have enough food to eat; We are able to entertain ourselves inside the comfort of our homes; I was able to create this blog and focus on myself without any external pressure or absolute need to find a job during a pandemic.

Needless to say that I am so lucky and blessed. I will never take this for granted. I completely understand that not everyone has this kind of privilege and I am just so thankful that my family is safe and secure. I can only hope the same for others and try to help them in my own capacity.

My Health

I am also aware that the world is in a health crisis. Aside from the COVID-19, a lot of people may be experiencing troubles with regards to their mental health.

I am just really grateful that my family and I are physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. We’re really trying our hardest to keep it that way and help each other as best as we can.

I make sure to exercise everyday and to eat healthy food. I’ve been meditating for weeks now to keep my mind calm and present. Overall, I’m just trying to keep myself preoccupied as much as possible. There are times where I get really sad and anxious but i’m lucky enough for it to not be as serious as mental illnesses.

I know that I still have a lot of things to be thankful for and I try to remind myself of these things every single day because I know how important it is to acknowledge such blessings. I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve such things but all I can say is that my heart is full. I will always do my best to deserve it and to not take things for granted.

This is my 6th entry for Project Self-Love answering the prompt “Write out a gratitude list of things you are thankful for”
